RoyalHaskoningDHV are no stranger to the GreenPorts Congress and Cruise Conference, and for 2024 they will be joining us for two sessions.

Green Corridors:

Richard Willis, Technical Director will be looking into the validation of an Irish Sea Green Shipping Corridor between the ports of Belfast and Liverpool, for regular ferry and container feeder services across the Irish Sea.

The project explored the need for port infrastructure for shore power, provision of alternative fuels in the region, generation of power within the two ports and supporting services, projects and regulatory change to deliver the needs of shipping operations to decarbonise.

This presentation will present the range of pilot and enabling projects to move forward the concept of a green shipping corridor, which so many other projects around the world are struggling with, along with the strategic steps necessary for the deployment and successful execution of pilot projects, harnessing funding and civic leadership to make change towards low carbon shipping.

Richard Willis is Technical Director Port Operations & Technology. He has over 25 years’ experience of the port and shipping industry, working on smart & green port development projects around the world. He has hands-on stevedoring and operational management experience, followed by over a decade of design and delivery of software projects for all types of ports & cargo terminals around the world.

Richard says: “I’m excited to be joining the Green Port Congress again this year, to talk about new developments in green shipping corridors, with highlights from on our recent project designing low-carbon freight shipping options between Liverpool and Belfast, using alternative vessel fuels and shore power, which will soon be published online”

Successful Port Integration for Net-Zero:

Deanna Cornell, Green & Smart Ports Consultant will cover the ‘Decarbonisation the Port of Poole Maritime Industrial Cluster’. Announced as one of twelve winners of the UK Government’s Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plans competition, the aim of the project is to develop a common vision for decarbonisation for the Cluster within a detailed roadmap, specifying clear and achievable targets.

With the project drawing to a close at the time of the Green Ports Congress, Poole Harbour Commissioners and lead project consultants Royal HaskoningDHV will share key insights and strategies for this maritime industrial cluster’s transition to Net Zero.

This presentation will provide a blueprint outlining the necessary steps for a port and its tenants to collectively eliminate Scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions from their operations. Amidst a wave of new regulations and reporting obligations, ranging from the FuelEU Maritime Regulation to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, this will equip attendees with a method of addressing emerging compliance risks and, crucially, to catalyse impactful change within the industry.

Deanna Cornell is Green Port consultant and expert in sustainable port operations, climate resilience and adaptation and has a rich background in decarbonisation strategies and hydrography. She has led pivotal projects funded by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank, for ports of all sizes around the world, and strives to reduce the environmental impact of the maritime industry.

Deanna says: “At this year’s Congress, we will be pleased to present our work with Poole Harbour Commissioners to develop a decarbonisation plan for the maritime industrial cluster, with targets to reduce emissions along this net zero journey for vessels, port operations and infrastructure, as a leading example of the opportunities for ports to adopt”
