Port of Salalah plans US$300m upgrade

The upgrade at the Omani port includes improvements to all six existing berths, a yard expansion and essential infrastructure projects. The port’s capacity will increase from 4.5 million teu to 6.5 million teu, positioning it as a key link connecting the Middle East, Indian subcontinent and east Africa.

“Our investment underscores our deep commitment to Oman and the region,” said Steven Yoogalingam, Port of Salalah’s chief executive.

“The new capabilities ensure a smooth and seamless operation from the port and provide opportunities for local and regional growth and job creation.”

The investment also covers a new access road, an upgraded electrical power substation and the expansion of reefer plugs to 2,000.

Equipment upgrades include 10 new STS cranes capable of handling ultra-large vessels 26 containers wide, alongside 12 hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes, two reach stackers and 30 terminal trucks and trailers.

In the 2023 Container Ports Performance Index, the Port of Salalah was ranked the second most efficient container port globally for the third consecutive year.

As part of the Gemini-cooperation, the port plays a vital role in global trade and was the first to receive a call from a Gemini vessel on 18 February.

“The port call marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the network’s operation, illustrating the strategic importance of Salalah in this global initiative,” concluded Yoogalingam.
