Port of Barcelona awards embankment contract

The works, which are scheduled to take 27 months, will involve building a sea embankment that will serve as the first enclosure for depositing materials from the dredging of the port’s docks, the navigation channel, and other ongoing projects, including the Adossat wharf and the new mooring points at the Energy wharf.

This embankment will delineate an area of 44.7 hectares between the South and Prat wharves and will reach depths of up to 16 metres. It will accommodate nearly 6.3 million m³ of materials, allowing the development of the future Catalunya wharf’s terraces.

Additionally, the project includes preparations for a terrace for storing and managing construction materials, reflecting a commitment to circular economy practices by recycling materials and minimising the need for transportation to external locations.

The embankment construction is the first step in a broader reorganisation of port activity, which will concentrate all container movement in the southern area. The initiative is aimed at providing the Port of Barcelona with infrastructure to decarbonise port operations and meet the growing needs of the maritime and port sector.

The tender for this project was launched in 2024 after receiving approval from the Ministry for Ecological Transition. Work is set to begin this summer.
