The Governor of New York has announced that $26.5m in state-funding is available for preserving and enhancing port and rail services in major trade and passenger travel corridors across the US state.
Included in the New York State Department of Transportation's (NYSDOT) five-year State Transportation Plan is funding for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program, which offers support for port and rail projects that enhance safety, facilitate regional economic development, grow competitiveness, alleviate congestion and boost operating capacity.
Projects funded through the initiative will be chosen through a competitive solicitation process and rated on criteria including a benefit-cost analysis, compliance with regional economic development plans and compatibility with other private and public investments.
Eligible project activities include track and bridge rehabilitation; yard, terminal and siding construction; elimination of clearance obstructions; wharf, dock and bulkhead construction; dredging; and other projects that enhance economic competitiveness.
Commenting on the move, Governor Cuomo said: “This funding will improve rail safety and port infrastructure while also alleviating congestion on our roads and boosting economic activity and growth.
“These investments in our state's transportation network will help secure a stronger New York for all.”
Paul Karas, Acting Commissioner for NYSDOT, said: “With this program, Governor Cuomo is continuing to make smart investments in state-wide, multi-modal transportation, improving rail safety, increasing rail and port freight capacity and supporting job creation while contributing to New York's economic competitiveness.”
Last year, New York granted $25m of funding to 19 applicants for rail and port improvement projects across the state, with an extra $5.4m in private and local funding being leveraged through this venture.
Applications for the funding will be accepted by NYSDOT until April 27.
