Mombasa heads off delay surcharge
Shipping lines have agreed to grant Mombasa port two months to bring down congestion levels or face the imposition of a monthly vessel delay surcharge. This will raise $17.9m, consisting of $200 levied per teu, as a means of recouping losses brought about by significant delays.
It will now be possible to transfer containers directly from the port to two satellite container freight stations, although such a move is opposed by Kenya Revenue Authority, which believes these two facilities do not meet all legal requirements.
