Construction of the project, to be located in Kampot’s Teuk Chhou district, is expected to begin in March, local officials told the Khmer Times, and will be built with a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

However, the ADB has not confirmed this, stating only that the “contract for Kampot Pier development and access road [is] expected to be awarded in March 2018”.

The Bank is committing some $18m to the project, it added.

Local officials in Cambodia are already enthusiastic about the port, which will support growing tourist numbers. They say ground-breaking will take place in less than two months, with the port expected to be finished by the end of 2019.

Four hectares have been allocated for the port. When complete, it will be able to accommodate ferries carrying up to 300 people.
